The Bismarckstraße underground station is a transfer station for the Berlin underground lines U2 and U7 . It is located at the intersection of Bismarck - / Wilmersdorfer Straße in the district of Charlottenburg and was opened on April 28, 1978. In contrast to the neighboring stations of the U2, it stands out due to its contrasting architecture.

history

Due to the S-Bahn boycott after 1961 due to the building of the wall and the shutdown of the tram , the subway in West Berlin was massively expanded. However, this only affected the more modern large-profile network (today's lines U5 to U9 ). The construction work in the small-profile network was limited to the construction of new transfer stations to new underground lines. In the area of today's U2, this happened in 1978 in Charlottenburg, between the existing Deutsche Oper and Sophie-Charlotte-Platz stations .

In the course of the construction of line 7, a tangential line that connects several district centers without detour via the western city center of Berlin , several existing lines were crossed. These included lines 4, 2 (today: U3 ) and 1 (today: partly U2). The intersection with the latter was created in the Bismarck- / Wilmersdorfer Straße area, 380 meters west of the Deutsche Oper station. Despite the short distance, a new crossing station was built to provide the necessary transfer options. The neighboring train station, 380 meters away, still remained. At the beginning of the construction work, the branch line from the Deutsche Oper to Richard-Wagner-Platz , known at the time as Line 5, was shut down on May 2, 1970 . After its completion, this connection was taken over by the new line 7.

Lower platform for trains on line U7

Since the then already 70-year-old tunnel of the then line 1 consisted only of weakly reinforced concrete and the BVG had no experience with this construction method at the time, they had the entire construction torn down and built it again from a completely closed reinforced concrete frame . After that, an underground station could be designed as a tower station, the two platforms were exactly at right angles to each other. Line 7 was given a 110-meter-long and 11.6-meter-wide platform, while two uncomfortable side platforms , each 4.5 meters wide, were built for the small-profile line. For the construction of a central platform , the tracks would have had to be pulled apart and the line had to be shut down for a long time, which the transport companies wanted to do without. Nevertheless, the small-profile station fits in well with the line, because most other stations also have side platforms. The Senate Traffic Administration chose Bismarckstrasse as the name of the new station . This created a little curiosity , because the Deutsche Oper station further east had this name until 1961 and carried it as a name affix until 1978.

As was customary at the time, the architect Rainer G. Rümmler took on the original design of the two platforms . He had the lower part of the station, where the trains on the U7 line stop, covered with aluminum panels, the platform walls were given white metal sheets. The black frames of the station signs served as a contrast. The small-profile platform was dominated by the colors green and yellow. Here, too, red station signs and seating were used as a contrast. The extension of line 7 and the tower station on Bismarckstrasse went into operation on April 28, 1978.

The station has had lifts since May 1990 to make it easier for passengers with prams and wheelchair users to change between the lines. The station had not changed significantly, either from the time it opened until the elevator was installed, and afterwards. However, the U1 line to the Schlesisches Tor on the upper platform has not been running since 1993 , now the U2 runs here to Pankow .

Parts of the station were renovated from summer 2009 to early 2010. Some wall parts and lamps have been renewed. At the level of line U2, the wall between the tracks was provided with the representation of a jungle landscape . The floor on the platform of the U7 line was completely renewed and guide strips for the blind were installed. This was previously black, after the renovation it is tiled in light gray , in accordance with the BVG's concept of using more light floors.

Despite the elevators, the station is not barrier-free , so the usual blind guidance systems on the platforms of the U2 line are still missing.

For 2013, the BVG planned a major overhaul of the station. For around 12.8 million euros, u. a. the staircases, lobbies, elevators and escalators were renewed. The renovation includes a complete redesign of the platforms by the architects Petra and Paul Kahlfeldt . The original color differentiation of the two levels is abandoned in favor of a uniform wall design with green glazed tiles. The work should be completed in the course of 2019, according to more recent information in the summer of 2022.

Connection

The underground station is only served by lines U2 and U7 of the underground. There are no direct transfer options to other local public transport lines .
