The underground station Rudow is the southern terminus of the Berlin U-Bahn - U7 , located in the district of Rudow under the Neuköllnerstrasse and forms a base for numerous regional bus services. The station opened on July 1, 1972.

history

The construction of the “Britz-Buckow-Rudow” (BBR), later called “ Gropiusstadt ”, began in November 1962 and was designed by the architects The Architects Collaborative (TAC) under the direction of Walter Gropius . The large residential area should generally be accessed by the underground, which should be extended from Britz ( Britz-Süd underground station ).

The construction work for the new section of Line 7 with the four train stations Johannisthaler Chaussee , Lipschitzallee , Wutzkyallee and Zwickauer Damm began in 1965 and were consistently agreed with the settlement work so that a closed building could be erected. On January 2, 1970, the Britz-Süd - Zwickauer Damm section went into operation. A large part of the Gropiusstadt was now accessible from a traffic point of view. The construction work for the settlement also took place further south in the former village of Rudow. Numerous apartment blocks were also built there, which also required traffic development.

The construction work for the provisional terminus in Rudow took place until 1971. The architect Rainer G. Rümmler designed a train station with a central platform , the rear track walls are adorned with red asbestos-cement panels , and the pillars with silver aluminum panels . Rümmler thus joined the standard type of train stations at that time, similar stations are, for example, the train stations Eisenacher Straße and Bayerischer Platz . One of the exits of the station, which leads to the south, has no mezzanine level due to its shallow depth; The BVG had a four-track sweeping system built behind the station .

On July 1, 1972, the BVG put the 1.1 kilometer long Zwickauer Damm - Rudow section into operation. Since then, Rudow station has been the end point of underground line 7.

Since then, not much has changed at Rudow U-Bahn station, apart from the different route destinations. Since 1978 it has been possible to take the underground to the Charlottenburg town hall on Richard-Wagner-Platz , in 1980 it was extended to Rohrdamm and since 1984 the Rathaus Spandau underground station has been the western end of the U7 line.

In May 1993, the Rudow underground station, an important traffic junction for the housing estate and other bus services, was given an elevator that enables barrier-free access to the platform.

For a long time, the BVG did not deal with the problem that some Berlin underground stations only have one exit. Only since a fire at the Deutsche Oper underground station in 2000, in which numerous passengers saved themselves due to the only existing exit through the tunnel, did this problem also come into the BVG's field of vision. It then decided, with its own funds and with funding from the State of Berlin, to equip numerous train stations with additional access. According to plans by the BVG, the last stations were the Rudow and Konstanzer Straße subway stations . The late retrofitting took place because of the very complex location of the station, and financial issues also played a role several times. Construction work on the second exit at Rudow station began in 2006; it was completed on June 19, 2008.

Since 2014, the station has been completely renovated as an important transfer station for the shuttle buses to Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The asbestos-contaminated wall coverings were removed and are to be replaced by newly designed wall elements. An exchange of the floor covering and the installation of a guidance system for the blind are also planned. The distribution level and the accesses are also being modernized. There are two more exits with escalators directly to new roofed bus stops for the express buses planned at frequent intervals after the airport opens, as well as the local bus routes that already exist to the airport. Originally, most of the work in the station should be completed by the end of 2016, the entire renovation including the above-ground stops by autumn 2017. The renovation work, for which the planning approval procedure was initiated in 2011 , is now expected to be completed in autumn 2019.

Long-term planning

For a possible extension of the U7 beyond the Rudow underground station, a route to Schönefeld Airport was reserved by the Berlin Senate in Berlin as early as the 1970s , which should be reached via three to four intermediate stations. In the planning of the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport, however, a subway connection was no longer taken into account, so there is no space for a subway platform in the airport train station under the terminal , which makes an economical and traffic-technically sensible connection very difficult.

Connection

The underground station is the south-eastern terminus of the U7 line and offers connections to numerous BVG and RVS bus lines , including bus lines X7 and 171 to Schönefeld Airport .
