Citadel Metro Station
The Metro Station Citadel is a station of the Berlin U-Bahn - U7 . It was opened on October 1, 1984 as part of the extension of the U7 to Spandau Town Hall . It is located in the Haselhorst district near the Spandau citadel of the same name , an old fortress, which the interior design of the station alludes to.
With its side platforms, this station is significantly different from the design of the north-western part of the U7 line, on which only central platforms were usually built.
When planning this station, the name Am Juliusturm was used to indicate the location under the street of the same name . However, since the nearby Spandau Citadel was considered in the further design, the name Citadel was used .
Note the the architect Rainer G. Rümmler designed bricks that the station wall and the elaborate entrance portals. City maps and photos of personalities from the formerly independent city of Spandau hang on the station wall .
Originally, the station was to be rebuilt to be barrier-free and equipped with three elevators by 2016 . The first elevator (from the platform out of town to the mezzanine level) went into operation on December 22, 2016. The second elevator from the platform in the city center to the mezzanine floor followed in May 2017, the third elevator to the surface was operational in September 2017. The costs for the three elevators and for the installation of a new platform floor with guidance system for the blind amounted to around 2.5 million euros.
In March 2017, it was announced that the underground station - along with six others on the northern U7 - would be listed as a historical monument .
