The Jakob-Kaiser-Platz is a Berlin subway station of U7 . It lies north of the eponymous square under the federal highway 111 in the district of Charlottenburg-Nord of the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and carries the BVG abbreviation JK. It is located 508 meters east of the Halemweg underground station and 880 meters west of the Jungfernheide underground station and is of particular importance as a transfer point for buses to and from Tegel Airport .

It is named after the German politician Jakob Kaiser ( CDU ), resistance fighter and first Federal Minister for all-German issues .

History and structure

The station, originally planned under the name Charlottenburg-Nord , was built in 1967 as a preliminary construction work for the construction of the A 111 city motorway above and was already used as a pedestrian tunnel to cross the motorway until the subway began operating. However, the actual construction of the underground line between Richard-Wagner-Platz and Rohrdamm did not begin until 1973. The underground station, now known as Jakob-Kaiser-Platz , was put into operation on October 1, 1980, together with the other stations in this construction phase .

Like the other stations on the U7 line that were built at the same time, this station was designed by Rainer G. Rümmler . Rümmler designed a 110-meter-long central platform with two entrances to the west and east of the A 100 city motorway . The station itself is kept relatively simple and is similar to the neighboring Halemweg subway station . The walls behind the tracks and the supporting columns are yellow. The station name badges are in the colors dark blue / red. Today the floor is brightly tiled . The entrances to the Kurt-Schumacher-Damm are also covered in yellow in the striking 1970s style.

A renovation of the station was planned for 2013. Originally, by 2016, the station was to be rebuilt to be barrier-free and two elevators installed. The completion of the work was then planned for 2017, the costs for this were estimated at 2.1 million euros. In the meantime, the wall panels on the back track areas have been replaced by yellow tiles and the station signs located there have been replaced by a smaller and simpler variant. The ceiling lights, which were previously arranged at right angles to the edge of the platform, have given way to a strip of lights running lengthways. The first elevator finally went into operation in December 2018, it leads from the east side of Kurt-Schumacher-Damm to the platform and cost around 1.1 million euros. A second elevator on the western side will not be completed until 2021. A total of 3.9 million euros has now been estimated for the barrier-free expansion.

Connection

At the underground station you can change to the bus lines X9, X21, M21, 109, 123 of the BVG .
