August Hermann Franke
August Hermann Franke (born August 30, 1853 in Sundern (today Gütersloh ), † May 31, 1891 in Montreux ) was a German Protestant theologian and hymn poet .
Life
August Hermann Franke was born on August 30, 1853 in Sundern, the son of a teacher. His father was appointed head of an orphanage and poor house in Barmen , where Franke attended high school. After he had passed his Abitur , he moved to the University of Leipzig in 1872 to study theology. Two years later he moved to the University of Bonn , teaching at a secondary school for girls on the side to finance his studies. Because of overexertion, Franke suffered from severe lung bleeding from 1876 onwards , but at the end of that year he was still able to pass his first theological exam. After spending the winter in Montreux, the University of Bonn appointed him a licentiate in theology in 1878 . From November he stayed at the royal candidate pen in Berlin , where he became an assistant the following year. He taught about the Old and New Testament . But he soon had to give up this position because of pneumonia .
After Franke got better, he worked as an inspector at the Tholuck Konvikt in Halle (Saale) . 1881 finally he was for the New Testament habilitation . Three years later he was hired as a paid associate professor at the theological faculty of the University of Halle , and in the following year he moved to the University of Kiel as a full professor . In 1889 he retired and died on May 31, 1891 during a recreational stay in Montreux because of his lung disease. He was buried in the Laurentiusfriedhof in Halle .
Because of his illness, Franke wrote only one scientific work apart from his habilitation thesis. He also wrote essays commenting on Paul's letters . He also wrote spiritual songs that were influenced by the revival movement of his time. Three of his songs were included in hymn books.
