Hermannplatz underground station
The Hermannplatz U-Bahn station is a transfer station for lines U7 and U8 of the Berlin U-Bahn , which is located under the square of the same name in the Berlin district of Neukölln , directly on the border with the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district. The U7 line went into operation on April 11, 1926, and that of the U8 line on July 17, 1927. In the station directory of the BVG it bears the designation Hpu (platform of the U7) and Hpo (platform of the U8). The station has several escalators as well as elevators for leaving the platforms and is therefore considered barrier-free . There is a possibility of connecting to several bus and Metrobus lines; a tram connection is planned for the long term. Due to its enormous size, the underground station next to the Rathaus Spandau underground station is still one of the most impressive stations on the Berlin underground.
history
The Hermannplatz underground station was designed as a tower station , with the platform of the U8 line being directly below street level and the north-south platform crossing it at a depth of nine meters. The platform of today's line U7 was laid out as a large hall through which the U8 platform slides as a crossbar. The ceiling of the two platforms is 7.25 meters above the lower platform of the U7 line. The central platform of the U7 is 135 meters long - instead of the 100 meters otherwise usual in the large profile network - and a width of up to 16.2 meters. The U8 platform is much more modest compared to the lower platform, only the platform length of 130 meters should be emphasized. The intersection of the two lines is under the intersection of the streets Hasenheide - Karl-Marx-Straße (U7) and Hermannplatz - Hermannstraße (U8). When the station opened, the escalators between the two platforms were another special feature: They were the first in the entire area of the Berlin subway . During the construction, direct access to the Karstadt department store, which was built at the same time, was also taken into account. The architects of the station were Alfred Grenander and Alfred Fehse.
On April 11, 1926, the section Hasenheide - Bergstrasse (today: Südstern - Karl-Marx-Strasse ) of the Neukölln branch of the then north-south subway was opened. The lower platform was also put into operation that day. The north-south railway was thus in operation from Seestraße to Bergstraße. On July 17, 1927, the upper platform of the GN-Bahn (GN for Gesundbrunnen - Neukölln ) was put into operation. This was connected with the commissioning of the very short section from Boddinstraße to Schönleinstraße (a good 1.5 kilometers) and marked the birth of the GN-Bahn, today's U8 line .
In 1993 the station was modernized. However, the color and structure of the tiles were not exactly matched. The color of the joints was also changed. The pillars with their capitals in the Art Deco style, however, were not renewed, these tiles are still original from 1926.
Connection
On the surface, until 1930, all of the roads leading into Hermannplatz had tram tracks and the trains of 15 lines stopped at the square. Because of the numerous tram lines, two exits were built directly at the tram stops. Since the 1950s, however, there has been a gradual changeover of operations to bus transport in West Berlin . On October 1, 1964, the last line (line 27) that ran across Hermannplatz was discontinued. On the Urbanstraße - Sonnenallee axis, line 95 touched Hermannplatz until May 2, 1965. Until the Britz depot was closed (1966), there were still service trips on some sections. Since German reunification , efforts have been made to extend the tram from the former eastern part of Berlin (e.g. Warschauer Straße ) to Hermannplatz, although this is not expected to be implemented in the next few years.
