Fehrbelliner Platz underground station
The Fehrbelliner Platz underground station is an underground station on the U3 and U7 lines in the Berlin district of Wilmersdorf in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district . It is located under Fehrbelliner Platz . The U3 station was opened on October 12, 1913, the U7 on January 29, 1971.
history
The Wilmersdorfer Untergrundbahn station (today: U3 line), which was opened in 1913 and designed by Wilhelm Leitgebel , received a parking facility at the beginning, as only a low load in the direction of Thielplatz was expected. In the years 1968–1972 this platform was fundamentally rebuilt, as a transition to the newly created platform of the U7 had to be made and a third access was necessary.
The platform of the U3, which is designated as Fpo , has largely been preserved in the appearance of 1913. The lower platform of the U7 ( designated Fpu ) was designed by Rainer G. Rümmler , who in 1964 was a department head in the Berlin Senate Department for building and housing, in particular responsible for traffic expansion measures . The platform was built between 1968 and 1971 as part of the westward expansion of U-Bahn line 7. At the western end, a reversing track was built, as Fehrbelliner Platz was the terminus of line 7 for seven years before the line heading west in the next phase of construction was further extended.
After the division of the city, Fehrbelliner Platz had become an important West Berlin administrative center with up to 15,000 employees. Therefore, Rümmler designed a distribution level at a simple depth (around five meters below the road) in order to separate the different traffic flows from passengers entering, leaving and changing and thus ensuring a quick and safe process. In addition, a total of six entrances from Fehrbelliner Platz to the subway station were created, the red-framed light displays in the softline design.
The architectural highlight is the sculptural entrance pavilion with rounded corners, which looks like an oversized Pop Art sculpture and is in stark contrast to the administrative buildings from the time of National Socialism , which surround the square in a semicircle. In addition to its function as an entrance hall, the building also included a bus stop, a kiosk, a restaurant and a clock tower with a traffic observation room. The entire building owes the nickname "drilling rig" to this in Berlin .
The station building and the platform of the U7 were placed under monument protection at the beginning of 2017 , the platform of the U3 already had this status.
