The Breitenbachplatz underground station is a Berlin underground station on the U3 underground line under Breitenbachplatz in the Dahlem district on the border with the Steglitz districts (both in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district ) and Wilmersdorf in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district . Like the other stations of the Wilmersdorf-Dahlemer Schnellbahn, the station went into operation on October 12, 1913. At the same time as the station was built, the above-ground square was also laid out. This oval, originally named Rastatter Platz , was renamed 'Breitenbachplatz' when the underground station below the square opened.

History and structure

The Breitenbachplatz underground station was built as part of the construction of the Wilmersdorf-Dahlemer subway between Wittenbergplatz and Thielplatz in the south of the Dahlem domain. Just like the very similarly designed Rüdesheimer Platz station and the Heidelberger Platz underground station, the Breitenbachplatz underground station was designed by the architect Wilhelm Leitgebel .

For the two original entrances in the north and south, Leitgebel designed stone pylons with lamp attachments and a stone fence, similar to the one at Rüdesheimer Platz . Leitgebel chose St. Andrew's cross and flower medallions as design features for the metal access gates . The middle staircase to the extended Schildhornstrasse was planned as early as 1909, but was not added until 1979. This leads into an above-ground stone and glass pavilion.

The platform hall is designed as a central platform . The walls are divided into a red-brown ceramic base , a light wall with semicircular niches and a dark brown mantelpiece as a conclusion. In the niches, nameplates and paintings by Joachim Szymczak alternate, which since 1988 have been the theme of the 150th anniversary of the Prussian Railway and the eponymous Prussian Minister of Public Works , Paul von Breitenbach , instead of advertising signs . On the columns between the niches there are depictions of animals, plants and scientific instruments as a reference to the institutes of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in Dahlem, which were originally nearby .

The hall ceiling is designed as a cassette-shaped ceiling , which is supported by granite-faced Doric pillars in the middle of the platform. In the cassettes there are octagonal mosaic fields with geometric patterns. Daylight falls through four elliptical openings onto the platform, which is now made of granite, originally paved with asphalt.

During the Second World War , the station remained largely undamaged. Only the northern access area was damaged and partly only rebuilt in a simplified manner. From the original furnishings, there are still three wooden double benches and the former ticket booth in the southern entrance area. The station is a listed building .

The underground station is barrier-free . The equipment with an elevator was put into operation on October 7, 2010; the construction costs for this amounted to 340,000 euros. A guidance system for the blind is also available.

Connection

At the underground station you can change from the U3 line to the bus lines 101, 248 and 282 of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe.
