The Leinestraße is a station of the Berlin underground - line U8 . It is located in the Neukölln district under Hermannstrasse between Leinestrasse and Okerstrasse and is abbreviated with L in the station directory of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) .

History and structure

The station was opened on August 4, 1929 after a construction period of two years and formed the southern end of the line until 1996. Only then was the extension to today's Hermannstraße terminus, which was planned at the time of construction and partly implemented shortly after, completed and put into operation. Like many other Berlin train stations at the time, it was built by Alfred Grenander and Alfred Fehse .

Until the start of the basic repairs, the station was largely in its original condition and was not barrier-free . It has a central platform .

Light green square tiles are attached to the walls . The large-volume tiles create an unevenly structured surface. This was created when the manufacturer Richard Blumenfeld Veltener Ofenfabrik AG pressed clay in the model. The joints, however, are very fine and hardly noticeable. The quality of this lining becomes particularly clear when comparing it with newer replacement surfaces.

There is a ticket office in one of the lobbies, but it is no longer used.

The tunnel, which was extended to the south as early as 1932, ended shortly before the Hermannstrasse train station until it was continued and served as an air raid shelter during World War II . Vehicles were parked here in the 1960s. From April 1945 to May 17, 1945 the station was temporarily closed due to war damage.

Since 2011, a basic overhaul of the train station, originally calculated at five million euros, has been carried out, combined with a barrier-free expansion, for which a further 1.8 million euros are estimated. The renewal of the external waterproofing was completed in 2012. During the work, additional significant weather and age-related damage to the wall and ceiling construction was discovered, which makes renovation of the station necessary. Additional costs of around 2.5 million euros were planned for this. The renovation work ultimately cost around 7.5 million euros. The station was renovated according to the historical model, and historical pictures also adorn the back track walls. The originally planned installation of granite flooring was prevented by the monument protection authorities, so the platform was now provided with asphalt. From August 12, 2013 to August 25, 2014, train operations in this section were suspended due to the work. An elevator went into operation in December 2014, and around 900,000 euros were invested in this. Together with the renewed platform area, the station has been barrier-free since then.
