Schönleinstraße underground station
The Schönleinstraße underground station is a station on the U8 line of the Berlin underground . It lies lengthways under the Kottbusser Damm between Schinke- and Schönleinstraße, on the border between Kreuzberg and Neukölln . From 1951 to 1992 the station was called Kottbusser Damm .
History and description
The street that gave it its name is named after Johann Lukas Schönlein , a tuberculosis researcher and personal physician to King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. During the planning and construction phase of the station, the working title was "Boekhstraße", and the name was only changed shortly before the opening.
The station was opened on July 17, 1927 and is named ST in the BVG station directory . Designed she was, like many other Berlin subway stations, from Alfred Grenander . From the opening until February 12, 1928, it formed the northern end point of what was then Line D.
The underground station is 1 1 ⁄ 2 times that depth. The central platform between the two tracks is 6.7 meters below street level, it is 130 meters long and 8 meters wide. At both ends, stairs lead to mezzanine floors, from where exits lead to the sidewalks on both sides of Kottbusser Damm. Another entrance to Böckhstrasse was dismantled after severe damage in the Second World War . There is an escalator in the southern staircase from the platform to the distribution hall on the mezzanine floor.
Due to its good structural condition, the non- barrier-free station has remained almost unchanged since it opened. Along the center of the platform, a row of tiled pillars with a square cross-section support the ceiling, similar pillars are located in the distribution halls. The ceramic tiles on the platform are gray / green and brown / pink; different tiles (yellow to green) were used in the two lobbies.
A renovation in line with listed buildings is planned from 2020, and an elevator will also be installed in the process. The work should take four years.
In the media
On December 25, 2016, clothes of a homeless man sleeping on a bench were set on fire. Passers-by immediately extinguished the flames on the paper that the 37-year-old had apparently covered himself with, so he was unharmed. Seven 15 to 21 year old men were arrested as suspects.
Another homeless man was attacked on February 20, 2019, this time with a knife. Passers-by also intervened here. The incident was recorded on video.
In the Tatort episode Against the Head , the station served as the setting for the fatal assault by two young people on a passerby.
Connection
At the underground station there is no direct transfer to other local public transport lines in Berlin .
