The platform

The Pankstraße underground station is a station on the U8 line of the Berlin underground in the Gesundbrunnen district . It bears the designation Pk in the station directory of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe , has no elevator to street level and is therefore described as not barrier-free .

The station has wall cladding made of brown tiles , the supports are clad with aluminum sheets.

The station was opened on October 5, 1977 with the extension of underground line 8 from Gesundbrunnen to Osloer Straße . Construction on this section began in September 1973.

By 2016, the station was to be converted to make it barrier-free and an elevator installed.

particularities

Access to the shelter

The station was built as a multi-purpose facility so that the platform and adjacent rooms can also be used as a shelter in the event of war or disaster. For example, the station has sanitary rooms, an emergency kitchen and a fresh air supply with filters. In an emergency, 3339 people can find shelter here. The additional costs for the construction were paid by the Federal Ministry of Finance . The facilities can be visited as part of guided tours organized by the Berliner Unterwelten association. The facility itself is owned by BVG.

The underground station and the civil defense system have been a listed building since 2011 .

A small curiosity is that the station name on the side walls of the platform is Pankstrasse , which differs from the correct spelling of Pankstrasse .

Connection

At the underground station you can change from the U8 line to the M27 bus line operated by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe.
