Mengestorf ( Bernese German Mängischtorf [ mæŋiʃtɔɾf ]) is a town in the district Gasel the community Köniz in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .
General
Mengestorf is located in the south of the city of Bern and, with around 100 inhabitants, is one of the smaller villages in the municipality of Köniz. It is a typical Bernese farming village. Most of the houses are well over 100 years old and are under monument protection. The Burren farm, built in 1783, is listed in the cultural property protection inventory with objects of national importance in category A.
Most of the residents work in agriculture. There are 11 farms in the village. In addition to agriculture (grain, potatoes and maize), dairy farming is an important branch of the business. The milk produced is delivered by the farmers to the milk collection point in Gasel .
In addition to the farms, Mengestorf also has a locksmith's shop, a carpentry business, the restaurant "Zum alten Burehus" and the Spycherstübli.
Mengestorf belongs to the Gasel postal district. There are shops nearby in Gasel.
Public transportation
The BLS train line S6 (Bern – Schwarzenburg) stops in Gasel and runs every half hour. Gasel train station can be reached on foot in 15 minutes and by bike in 5 minutes. By train you can reach Bern in 16 minutes and Köniz in 4 minutes. The Bernmobil bus company is also available from Köniz .
Primary school
In Mengestorf's primary school, pupils are taught from 1st to 6th grade. In addition to Mengestorf, the catchment area of the school includes the villages of Oberried, Liebewil and Gasel. From the 7th grade onwards, the pupils visit the upper school center in Niederscherli .
Cheese cooperative Gasel Mengestorf
The cheese-making cooperative aims to provide economic support to its affiliated milk producers by means of cooperative self-help through:
- Selling the milk as cheaply as possible
- The creation of the corresponding structural and technical requirements (maintenance of the Gasel milk collection point)
- The general promotion of the dairy industry and support for measures to improve the quality of milk and milk products
Forest path cooperative Mengestorf
The Mengestorf Forest Path Cooperative is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the paths and wood storage areas in the mountain forest (forest near Mengestorf). Members are the owners of the mountain forest.
