The AEG planned since 1907, the present districts healthy well and Neukölln to open by means of a subway. The execution was sealed on March 18, 1912 with the city of Berlin. Peter Behrens provided the artistic designs. The railway line was supposed to be completed by September 30, 1918, which was taken over by AEG-Schnellbahn AG , founded in 1914 .

In October 1919 the work was finally stopped due to a lack of labor and changed priorities on the part of the AEG. Greater Berlin sued and won by court ruling on January 9, 1923. AEG Schnellbahn AG was liquidated and the route fragment was transferred to Nordsüdbahn AG , a subsidiary of the city. Finally, the route Schönleinstrasse - Boddinstrasse was opened on July 17, 1927. On April 6, 1928, the extension of the line north to Neanderstrasse (today: Heinrich-Heine-Strasse ), on which Moritzplatz station is also located, went into operation.

Under the underground station there is a transfer station from the 1920s as a preliminary construction work for a never realized underground line between Treptow and Moabit . In the time of National Socialism , the underground line was dropped and instead a tunnel S-Bahn called the East-West S-Bahn was planned. As early as 1934, the facility was made available to the Kreuzberg district for the installation of a public air raid shelter . The plans for the S-Bahn were maintained after 1945 and officially pursued until 1985. During an air raid on February 3, 1945, a bomb hit the station and killed 36 people who were probably in the area below the station.

Actually, today's line U8 should not run over Moritzplatz, but over Oranienplatz . The corresponding train station in Dresdener Strasse on Oranienplatz was already under construction before the First World War , but the construction work had to be canceled due to the war. Due to an injunction from the city of Berlin, the shell of the station had to be completed in 1921 in order to reopen the street for traffic. Nevertheless, the decision was made in 1927 for a route across Moritzplatz, due to the better transport connections in the tram network.

Assumptions that the Wertheim Group allegedly wanted a subway connection to its new branch on Moritzplatz (similar to the competitor Karstadt on Hermannplatz ) and that the department store group was therefore able to change the plan by paying five million Reichsmarks cannot be assumed occupy. The Wertheim branch on Moritzplatz was badly damaged in the Second World War and was never rebuilt.

During the division of Berlin , Moritzplatz underground station was the last station on the U8 line in West Berlin heading north. There were corresponding announcements and signs.

In the years 2005 to 2006 the underground station was completely repaired. Contrary to earlier plans, the installation of an elevator is only planned for the second quarter of 2020.

The Moritzplatz underground station and the immediate vicinity are considered the focal point of drug crime .
