Eberswalder Strasse underground station
The Eberswalder Straße is an underground station of the subway line U2 in the district of Prenzlauer Berg of Berlin Pankow district . It is located on Schönhauser Allee just after the intersection of Eberswalder / Danziger Strasse and Kastanien- / Pappelallee. The station opened by the Hochbahngesellschaft under the name Danziger Strasse on July 27, 1913 was called Dimitroffstrasse from 1950 to 1990 and is operated by the BVG under the abbreviation EB .
Konnopke's snack bar has been located around 80 meters south under the viaduct of the elevated railway since 1960 .
history
In 1905, three years after Berlin's first elevated railway went into operation, the then still independent rural community of Pankow requested a connection to the network. After a specific route had been worked out, in March 1910 permission was granted to continue building the Centrumslinie from the Spittelmarkt underground station via Alexanderplatz and along Schönhauser Allee to the Nordring . Initially, the elevated railway company favored a continuous tunnel route. As before with the Centrumslinie, she wanted to buy up adjacent properties in order to counteract complaints from residents regarding the tunnel construction. However, since this method was already well known, the price of land along Schönhauser Allee rose drastically before construction began, so that the company was forced to create the last section as an elevated railway in order to save costs. However, the solution also had the advantage that it was now possible to cross the north ring, which runs in the cut at this point, without problems. After around two years of construction, the Alexanderplatz – Nordring section was opened to traffic.
The station is located on the median of Schönhauser Allee and has a central platform with two exits. The southern half of the 110 meter long platform is provided with a hall, later the northern end was also covered with a single-support roof structure. The hall is made of riveted steel and is green. The Nordring station (today: Schönhauser Allee ) as the second station on the elevated railway line has an almost identical structure .
After the Second World War and the repair of the associated damage, the station and street were renamed Dimitroffstraße in 1950 - after the Bulgarian Prime Minister Georgi Dimitroff . There was also a memorial plaque for the politician who died in 1949.
The political change sparked the discussion about whether the street and the underground station should not be renamed. While the then Prenzlauer Berg district opposed the renaming in Danziger Strasse , the Berlin Senate under the leadership of the CDU and SPD supported it . The then (East) Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVB), which accordingly had to adhere to the decision, took a detour in 1990 and named the station unceremoniously after Eberswalder Strasse, the western extension of Dimitroffstrasse and Danziger Strasse. The name only caught on slowly, some of the residents in the district still refer to it as the “Dimitroffstrasse subway station”.
After another viaduct renovation of the U2 line, an elevator went into operation at the end of 2010, so that the platform is now barrier-free .
