The Danziger road is a main traffic street in Berlin's Pankow district . It is located in the northeast of the city center in the Prenzlauer Berg district and is part of the inner city ring . Danziger Straße begins north at the intersection with Schönhauser Allee and ends south at the corner of Landsberger Allee . It runs parallel to the other ring structures of the Berlin cityscape, around 1.5 kilometers outside the former customs wall (today's Torstrasse ) and around 500 meters inside the ring railway .

course

Danziger Straße consists of three lanes and one parking lane in both directions. According to plans by the red-red-green Senate in 2018, a cycle path is to be set up on the section between Prenzlauer Allee and Landsberger Allee.

To the west of Danziger Strasse is Eberswalder Strasse and then Bernauer Strasse , which form the northern inner city ring. To the south, Petersburger Strasse , Warschauer Strasse in Friedrichshain and Skalitzer Strasse in Kreuzberg form the extension of Danziger Strasse. From the Nordbahnhof on Bernauer Strasse in Mitte to Warschauer Strasse station, the inner city ring and thus the entire course of Danziger Strasse will be traversed by the M10 tram , one of the city's most important tram lines, which operates 24 hours a day.

In its course, Danziger Strasse crosses several important entry and exit roads , above all Prenzlauer Allee and Greifswalder Strasse . Other well-known cross streets are Pappelallee, Knaackstraße, Lychener Straße, Schliemannstraße, Dunckerstraße, Kollwitzstraße, Winsstraße, Bötzowstraße and Kniprodestraße.

Between Kniprodestrasse and Landsberger Allee on the south side of the street there is the Volkspark Friedrichshain , between Prenzlauer Allee and Greifswalder Strasse on the north the Ernst-Thälmann-Park .

The sports and recreation center has stood at the intersection with Landsberger Allee since 1981 .

history

The road was first built in 1822 as a dirt road. It was supposed to connect the country roads that had existed since the Middle Ages , today's major arterial roads , and was therefore called Communication .

The development of the area was largely based on the specifications of the Hobrecht Plan, which came into force in 1862 . The systematic development began around 1890. In 1874 the western section of this path, today the area between Schönhauser Allee and Greifswalder Straße, was named Danziger Straße after the city of Danzig . The part to the southeast between Greifswalder Strasse and Landsberger Allee was named Elbinger Strasse after the city of Elbing .

Following the Ringbahn, which was completed in this area in 1867, the city's IV gas station was built on a 20-  hectare site between the Ringbahn and Danziger Strasse . The first gas tank was completed in 1874, and five more followed by 1900.

The elevated railway , which opened in the course of Schönhauser Allee in 1913, was given the Danziger Strasse station at the intersection with Danziger Strasse .

The gas storage facility was blown up on July 28, 1984

The gas plant, now known as the Dimitroffstrasse gas works, was shut down in 1984 and its gas storage facility was blown up. Committed monument preservationists protested against the demolition, but could not prevent it. The Ernst-Thälmann-Park , including a planetarium , a large memorial for the former chairman of the KPD , Ernst Thälmann, and several high- rise apartment buildings was built on the vacated site until the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987 . Some of the plant's historic buildings have been preserved and are listed as historical monuments . A modern low-rise building for cultural use, the honeycomb , was added as a new building on the site. The entire new park and residential complex, which provided apartments for 4,000 Berliners, was inaugurated on July 15, 1986 with a big celebration.

After the political change in the GDR and the reunification of Berlin, the question of renaming the street arose. The district assembly of Prenzlauer Berg refused to rename streets. The transport companies changed the name of the high station on October 3, 1990 to the opposite Eberswalder Straße . This was part of a renaming campaign that affected numerous underground stations in the former East Berlin .

On November 1, 1995, the Berlin Senator for Construction, Herwig Haase, disregarded the opposing vote of the district parliament and the resistance of local residents and had the entire street renamed Danziger Strasse . This also affected the south-eastern section of the road, which was called Elbinger Strasse until 1950 . However, the elevated station retained its "makeshift name", which it received four years earlier, and is still called Eberswalder Strasse today .
