Theater under the roof with a large banner for the Grete production

The theater under the roof, also called TuD, was founded in 1986 on the site of the IV. Städtische Gasanstalt in a renovated and converted factory building and is part of the cultural center in Ernst-Thälmann-Park at the intersection of Danziger Strasse and Greifswalder Strasse . The official opening took place on April 1, 1986 as the second venue for the Berlin Puppet Theater in the Kulturhaus in Ernst-Thälmann-Park . Another part of this cultural center, which was created on the occasion of Ernst Thälmann's 100th birthday , is not only the theater under the roof but also the WABE event location . Liesel Dechant, the current director of the theater under the roof, worked there as a program designer until she moved to the theater under the roof in 1996.

The name of the theater is explained by the fact that the theater room is located on an upper floor of the building, which is particularly eye-catching due to the striking balcony facing Danziger Straße.

The theater under the roof does not have its own ensemble; mainly theater productions by independent theater groups are performed. The under-the-roof theater sees an important role in promoting young directors. The aim is to “give young directors a chance to start at Moloch Berlin”, says Liesel Dechant.

The productions at the theater under the roof, including many world premieres and premieres, received numerous awards and invitations to festivals. For example, the productions Keine Gnade and Whiskey Flags by director Jo Fabian were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 1994 . In 2005 the production Grete , staged by Anja Gronau and played by Claudia Wiedemer, u. a. awarded the Friedrich Luft Prize for the best theater production in 2004 and received invitations, for example, to Chicago , St. Petersburg or the Impulse Theater Festival . The play was performed well over a hundred times at different venues, which is extraordinary for an off-theater productions . The production Johanna , also by Anja Gronau and starring Claudia Wiedemer, was invited to the Tehran Fajir Theater Festival in Iran in 2005 .

Many successful acting and directing careers began at the theater under the roof. The young Corinna Harfouch played there, directors such as Jo Fabian, Astrid Griesbach , Anja Gronau, Amina Gusner , Sebastian Hartmann and Jan Jochymski have already staged there.

The Berlin Orphtheater used the stage of the theater under the roof for several years as a rehearsal and performance venue.

The theater under the roof has up to 80 seats. As a municipal venue, it is sponsored by the Pankow district .
