The WABE in Berlin is a cultural event location. It is the largest municipal cultural institution in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg / Pankow . The WABE was built in 1986 on the site of the IV. Städtische Gasanstalt in the shape of an octagon and is part of the cultural center in Ernst-Thälmann-Park at the intersection of Danziger Strasse and Greifswalder Strasse .

history

In 1873 the IV. Municipal gas station was put into operation. In 1898 the maximum daily output of the plant was 300,000 m³. In 1908 the 6th and last gas tank was connected to the town gas supply. In 1945 production was resumed with three almost undamaged gas containers. In 1952 it was converted into a gas coking plant . Due to Berlin's conversion to natural gas, the gasworks was shut down in 1983. After the gas tanks were demolished, a residential park was built on the premises of the institution until 1986. The remaining administrative and regulatory buildings were converted for the culture house in Ernst-Thälmann-Park. Today a wide variety of events, concerts, theater, festivals and exhibitions take place in the cultural center. The cultural center includes:

  • the COMB
  • the theater under the roof
  • the TanzZwiet
  • the Galerie Parterre Berlin
  • the art workshops / youth theater floor
