Werner Richter (sculptor)

Werner Richter (born May 4, 1923 in Delitzsch ; † 2012 ) was a German sculptor , medalist and lecturer . His place of work was in East Berlin . Numerous works created by him decorate public places in Berlin districts.

Werner Richter and two other GDR artists laid a commemorative wreath on the Käthe Kollwitz memorial in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg in 1974.

biography

Werner Richter probably completed his training at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art . He later taught in this institution and was appointed professor .

He lived in Berlin, in the 1980s on Czarnikauer Strasse in what was then the Prenzlauer Berg district.

Richter mainly carried out orders from municipal institutions. His works consist of various materials such as bronze , concrete and sandstone and belong to the style of socialist realism .

  • Standing Barbara , 1960, bronze on a cube-shaped granite base, in Berlin-Baumschulenweg , Späthstraße 80/81, placed there in 1975
  • Rehkitz , 1966, in Berlin-Köpenick , Köpenzeile 123
  • Elefant , 1967, in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde at the open-air stage in the Tierpark Berlin
    has been in the Tierpark since 1978.
  • Two swans , 1967, bronze, in Berlin-Koepenick , on April 23rd
  • Elefant , 1967, concrete, in Berlin-Friedrichshagen , Peter-Hille-Straße 99
  • Four brownies , made in 1968, placed on Bulgarische Strasse, Treptower Park in 1981. Bronze figures tumbling down a concrete staircase; was at the specified location until 2015. The 100 kg heavy bronze sculpture was stolen by non-ferrous metal thieves.
  • On the grounds and in the rooms of the Archenhold observatory in Berlin-Alt-Treptow , several sculptures are reminiscent of personalities who have made a contribution to astronomy. Richter designed the following portrait busts: Galileo Galilei (1974, bronze with wood on granite), Nicolaus Copernikus (1973, bronze on granite), Johannes Kepler (this is no longer available according to the district office) and Johann Gottfried Galle (1976/1984 , Bronze on granite)
  • Three monuments to the anti-fascist resistance struggle. The main motif they use is the inverted red triangle , which marked political prisoners during the Nazi era . The angles are of different sizes and are repeated in layers.
    • in the Dörpfeldstrasse corner of Nipkowstrasse in Berlin-Adlershof , inaugurated in 1977. It has the shape of a stele , which is surmounted laterally by the angles. It commemorates the communists Otto Nelte, Willi Gall and Walter Gerber, who were murdered. A plaque next to the stele contains the inscription: “In memory of the heroic resistance fighters against fascist barbarism. Your legacy has been fulfilled in the socialist German Democratic Republic. ”According to the district office's listing, it is no longer available at the specified location.
    • in the corner of Danziger Strasse and Diesterwegstrasse in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg , inaugurated on September 28, 1979. With the title Victim of the Resistance Struggle, it is made entirely of red sandstone as a standing wall element, into which the angles are sculpted. At the foot there is the inscription: “In memory of the resistance fighters murdered by fascism. Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg ”. The image is a listed cultural monument .
    • in Singerstrasse in Berlin-Friedrichshain . It also has the shape of a stele, which is surrounded by a thick "belly band" in which there is a red angle. The inscription names the resistance fighters Gerda Boenke , Herbert Häberlein , Alfred Jung , Ernst Perzel , Albert Reuschler , Gustav Staats and Emmerich Schaper . Underneath is the saying “You were murdered”.
  • Bronze medal on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Heinrich Zille's death , 1979; cast by the foundry of the State Art Trade of the GDR in Schöneiche near Berlin ; in the safe of the Münzkabinett Berlin
  • Market fountain in Delitzsch, public inauguration on May 27, 1983.
  • Cattle breeder , 1983, in Berlin-Altglienicke , Richterstraße 10, erected in 1984, concrete
  • Reh , 1986, in Berlin-Alt-Treptow , Lohmühlenstraße 23
