The Berliner Kurier is a tabloid from Berlin that is published by the Berliner Verlag . The Berliner Kurier is mainly used in the eastern districts of Berlin. The sold circulation reached 70,771 copies in the fourth quarter of 2019. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, no circulation was reported in the first quarter of 2020.

From 1949 to 1990 the newspaper was called BZ am Abend .

History of the newspaper

The first edition appeared on July 15, 1949 under the name BZ am Abend in Berliner Verlag GmbH . In 1953 the BZ was subordinated to the Central Committee of the SED in the evening . The Berlin publishing house continued to act as publisher. However, it was attributable to the SED press monopoly. For a long time, BZ am Abend was the only evening and street-selling newspaper in the GDR . By the end of the GDR, it had a daily circulation of around 200,000 copies.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, the magazine publisher Gruner + Jahr together with the publisher Robert Maxwell took over the Berliner Verlag and thus BZ am Abend and the Berliner Zeitung . The BZ in the evening became the Berliner Kurier , also to avoid confusion with the competitor from the west , the BZ .

After the decision of the parent company Bertelsmann to limit itself to its core competencies, Gruner + Jahr began to part with its newspaper holdings. The Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group , which had already been active on the Berlin market with Tagesspiegel , tried to take over the Berlin publishing house in June 2002 . This takeover was prohibited by the Federal Cartel Office. A complaint by the publisher before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court was rejected. Holtzbrinck then filed a lawsuit with the Federal Court of Justice . Formally, the publishing house still belonged to the Bertelsmann subsidiary Gruner + Jahr, which sold it in 2005 to BV Deutsche Zeitungsholding , which belonged to the Mecom Group . In January 2009, the Mecom Group sold the Berlin publishing house to the Cologne-based media group M. DuMont Schauberg .

On November 1, 2016, the editorial team was replaced by Berliner Newsroom GmbH, which is the service provider for the content of the Berliner Zeitung and the Berliner Kurier. From October 2018 to January 2020, the Berliner Kurier obtained its national content from the editorial network in Germany .

In September 2019, the Berlin entrepreneur couple Silke and Holger Friedrich took over the Berliner Verlag.
