The Berliner Verlag GmbH is a German publishing house , which the couple Silke and Holger Friedrich belongs. He was based in the Berliner Verlag on Alexanderplatz until 2017 and has been based in the Feratti building on Spittelmarkt since then .

history

The Berliner Verlag was founded in 1945 in the eastern part of Berlin as a newspaper and magazine publisher and until 1990 was owned by the SED party company Zentrag .

The publisher specialized in newspapers and magazines from and for Berlin and published the following newspapers and magazines:

The publishing director was Hermann Leupold until his death in 1967 and Rudolf Barbarino until 1983 .

In 1990, after the political change, the publishing house went into a joint venture between Maxwell Communications and Gruner + Jahr . In 1992, Gruner + Jahr took over the publishing house alone and sold it to the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group in 2002 . The Federal Cartel Office prohibited this sale because of a dominant market position, because Holtzbrinck is already publishing the Tagesspiegel in Berlin . That is why the publisher was formally part of Gruner + Jahr until 2005, but Holtzbrinck was de facto responsible.

In October 2005 the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group sold the publishing house to BV Deutsche Zeitungsholding , which belonged to the Mecom Group . The employees of the publishing house protested against the takeover to the end, as job cuts were feared. The sale was approved by the German Federal Cartel Office in November 2005.

On January 12, 2009, the over-indebted Mecom Group sold the publishing house and its other German publishing activities to the Cologne-based media group M. DuMont Schauberg . Since then, the Berliner Verlag has been a subsidiary of the PMB Press and Media House Berlin of M. DuMont Schauberg (65%) and Heinen-Verlag (35%).

At the end of 2015, the DuMont media group took over the shares of the Cologne-based Heinen publishing house in PMB Presse- und Medienhaus Berlin GmbH & Co KG. The Berliner Verlag thus became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the DuMont media group. On November 1, 2016, the editorial offices of the Berliner Zeitung and the Berliner Kurier were replaced by Berliner Newsroom GmbH, which is the service provider for the content of the two newspapers.

In September 2019, the sale of the Berlin publishing house to the Berlin entrepreneur couple Silke and Holger Friedrich became known. The Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover on September 30, 2019. On November 1, 2019, Michael Maier became editor of the Berliner Zeitung and chairman of the management of the Berliner Verlag. He resigned from the office of Chairman of the Management Board on July 20, 2020, but remained the editor.
