Pacem in Terris Award

The Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award ( German : "Peace on Earth Award") is a Catholic peace award in the United States .

The award has been presented annually since 1964 in memory of the encyclical Pacem in terris ("Peace on Earth") by Pope John XXIII. Awarded by the Diocese of Davenport , Iowa . The award goes to people with special commitment to peace and justice.

Since 1976 the "Quad Cities Pacem in Terris Coalition" has been the sponsor; Since 2005 there is the sponsorship of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport , the St. Ambrose University , the Augustana College , the United Churches of the Quad Cities and the religious order Sisters of the Holy Humility of Mary .

The winners Martin Luther King , Mother Teresa , Archbishop Desmond Tutu , Mairead Corrigan , Adolfo Maria Pérez Esquivel and Lech Wałęsa were later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
