Jim Wallis (born June 4, 1948 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American evangelical preacher , founder of the Christian Sojourners Commune , political activist, presidential advisor, author and lecturer in politics and religion at Harvard . He is one of the leading figures of the left evangelicals (American: Red-Letter Christians ) worldwide.

Life

He graduated from Michigan State University and attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield , Illinois , where he was already gathering like-minded people. In 1971 the Christian Sojourners Commune emerged , which he founded and has been leading ever since. He also heads the non-profit Call to Renewal , which emerged from Sojourners in 1995 and works with various religious figures , organizations and churches to eradicate poverty. Wallis is friends with the Franciscan and author Richard Rohr , with whom he worked primarily in the peace movement of the 1970s.

Since President George W. Bush took office , he has also distinguished himself as a critic of his theological arguments. He was also spiritual advisor to Hillary Clinton , Barack Obama and spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos to share his views. He is a regular columnist for the Sojourners online magazine , but his writings have also been featured in influential media outlets, and he teaches a course in politics and religion at Harvard University in Boston .

He now lives in downtown Washington, DC with his wife Joy and sons Luke and Jack
