Ernest Leo Unterkoefler

Ernest Leo Unterkoefler (born August 17, 1917 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , USA ; † January 4, 1993 ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Charleston .

Life

Ernest Leo Unterkoefler received on 18 May 1944, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on December 11, 1961 titular bishop of Latopolis and auxiliary bishop in Richmond . The Apostolic Delegate to the United States of America, Egidio Vagnozzi , ordained him episcopal on February 22 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Raleigh , Vincent Stanislaus Waters , and the Coadjutor Bishop of Wheeling , Joseph Howard Hodges .

On December 12, 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Charleston .

In 1980, Unterkoefler was awarded the Pacem in Terris Award by the Diocese of Davenport for his commitment to workers' rights and the support of the labor movement among the poor inhabitants of the Appalachians .

On February 22, 1990, Pope John Paul II accepted his health-related resignation.
