John Dear (born August 13, 1959 in Elizabeth City , North Carolina , USA ) is an American priest of the Catholic Jesuit Order , university teacher, peace activist and author on non-violence.

Life

John Dear uses civil disobedience methods as a way to protest against war and violence. In the aftermath of his protests, he was arrested more than 75 times; his longest sentence was eight months in prison plus nine months of house arrest. He received this for his participation in a ploughshare disarmament campaign. As a result, Dear also lost his voting rights in the United States , the right to travel freely, and receives special investigations at airports.
