Elizabeth City is a place in the counties Pasquotank and Camden in the state of North Carolina in the United States of America and is also the administrative seat of Pasquotank County. The city belongs to the Inner Banks region in the state's coastal plain. The place was originally founded as Redding in 1793, but later renamed Elizabeth City. It is unknown whether the name refers to Elizabeth I of England or the wife of the city's founder, Elizabeth "Betsy" Tooley.
One of the large Coast Guard Air Stations is located on the southern city limits of Elizabeth City, since these are subordinate to the United States Department of Homeland Security , the base of one of the major employers and an important economic factor alongside tourism.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 17,188 people in 6,577 households and 4,189 families lived here. The population density is 742.3 inhabitants per km². The racial the population is made up of 40.24% White, 56.60% African American , 0.27% Native American , 0.79% Asian , 0.62% from other races, 1.46% from two or more ethnicities. 1.5% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,577 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% of whom are married couples living together, 23.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 31.7% consisted of single households and 14.5% had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.01 people.
25.7% of the population were under 18 years old. 15.1% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.4% between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.1% between 45 and 64, and 15.7% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 75.4 men.
