The Inner Banks denotes an area of ​​approximately 57,568 square kilometers on the east coast of the United States , which belongs to the coastal region in the east of the state of North Carolina . Most of this region flourished until the Civil War in which the farmland and shipping companies became the target of Union troops. Many cities in the region were completely destroyed during this time, including Plymouth and Winton . One of the first steel armored warships , the CSS Albemarle was used by the Confederates in Plymouth.
