New Bern (dt. About New Bern ) is a town in Craven County in the US state of North Carolina with 30,101 inhabitants.
It was founded in 1710 by emigrants from Switzerland and Germany ; Christoph von Graffenried and Franz Ludwig Michel from Bern as well as John Lawson were significantly involved . The British Governor William Tryon made the small port city the capital of the North Carolina colony in 1765. The restored Capitol and its 18th century house, the Tryon Palace, which has around 5.2 hectares of gardens, is still in the center of New Bern today.
In the 19th century, after Raleigh became the capital of North Carolina in 1792 , New Bern was a major port city. During the Civil War it was captured and occupied by the Army of the Northern States after a heavy battle on March 14, 1862. New Bern still has three historic districts with houses, shops and churches, some of which date from the 19th century. New Bern has 36 registered landmarks and more than 150 other entries on the National Register of Historic Places .
The coat of arms of the city corresponds to the coat of arms of the city of Bern , only that the red bear penis is missing on the American version. The motif with the Bernese bear, which dates back to the Middle Ages, can be found everywhere in New Bern today: on public buildings, the city's vehicles and on the uniforms of the city officials and the police. The first flag, a gift from the city of Bern from 1896, is now on display in the town hall's courtroom.
Pepsi-Cola was invented in New Bern in 1898 by the young pharmacist Caleb Bradham in his pharmacy, Bradham's Pharmacy , and was initially known as Brad's Drink . The building still stands at the intersection of Middle Street and Pollock Street in downtown and is now home to the historic Pepsi Store.
Today New Bern presents itself as a small town with a share of services, agriculture (especially cotton and tobacco), forestry and industry.
