Weyerhaeuser is one of the biggest international Forestry corporations . The company operates 13.9 million acres of forest , 2.3 million of which are in the United States . Most of the remaining areas are located in Canada , where they are leased by the state.

history

The company was founded by Friedrich Weyerhäuser . The purchase of around 360,000 hectares of forest from the Northern Pacific Railway by Frederick Weyerhäuser and 15 partners on January 18, 1900 is considered to be the founding date, even if Friedrich Weyerhäuser already owned some sawmills at that time . The company was based in Tacoma, with George S. Long as managing director, who remained in that position for 30 years.

In the beginning, Weyerhaeuser concentrated on buying land and selling standing trees, so we didn't do any logging . But just two years after it existed, a fire damaged large parts of the building. In order to be able to use the burnt remains of the tree, the company hired hundreds of loggers and had the remains felled. That was the step into the trade.

In 1915, the company's first all-electric sawmill went into operation in Everett, Washington. In the 1920s, Weyerhaeuser acquired the first steam ships to be able to transport its products to the east coast . In the following years the fleet was further expanded. In 1928 the company developed the brand 4-Square , under which standardized wood was produced, an absolute innovation at the time. Weyerhaeuser acquired the first pulp mill in 1931; it also made profits in the subsequent economic crisis.

It was only very late that Weyerhaeuser switched to regulated and sustainable forest management , which had long been the standard in Europe : in 1937 the company announced a new approach in the wood industry with the slogan Timber Is a Crop (in English, wood is a useful plant ). Instead of just cutting down forests as before, a start has now been made to reforest the forests in a targeted manner in order to be able to “harvest” again later. This was suggested by the lumberjacks Ed Baker and Glen Masterson. In 1938, trees were planted experimentally for the first time.

In 1941 Weyerhaeuser had Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produce the film Trees and Homes . This documentary was later shown in schools, among other places.

In the 1950s, the company opened subsidiaries in Venezuela , Malaysia and the Philippines . It also expanded into the southern United States, where it acquired large areas of forest. The 1950s also saw the entry into the packaging industry . Weyerhaeuser entered fine paper production in the 1960s with the purchase of the Hamilton Paper Company in Pennsylvania . In addition, the company acquired over 700,000 acres in Arkansas , completing its largest single real estate purchase. In 1963 Weyerhaeuser went public in San Francisco and New York .

The typhoon Frieda destroyed 1,962 large forest areas. Since the US market did not need such large quantities of wood, Weyerhaeuser sold the wood to Japan . The typhoon was the trigger for the entry into the market in the Far East . In 1965, as part of a joint venture , the company built a production facility for bleached fuel in the Canadian city of Kamloops . In 1974, Weyerhaeuser was the first company in the USA to export to the People's Republic of China .

The eruption of the Mount St. Helens volcano on May 18, 1980 destroyed large areas of forest as well as material and roads belonging to the group. As before, Weyerhaeuser made great efforts to save the still usable wood. More than 1,000 people were involved in it for almost three years. Despite the skepticism of many, the company began reforesting the area and had a total of 18.4 million seedlings planted.

In 1999 Weyerhaeuser bought the Canadian competitor MacMillan Bloedel for USD 2.6 billion. In 2006 the group parted with its fine paper business.
