Columbus is a city in Lowndes County in the US state of Mississippi and the county seat of Lowndes County.

geography

Columbus is located about 220 kilometers northeast of the capital Jackson , near Mississippi's eastern border with the neighboring state of Alabama .

Columbus is part of the Golden Triangle ( Golden Triangle ) composed of Starkville , West Point and Columbus there. The region shares the Golden Triangle Regional Airport , which is about halfway between Columbus and Starkville.

The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway runs west past Columbus. Northwest of the city is Columbus Lake . The Luxapallila Creek runs through the eastern part of Columbus . There are other bodies of water in the city.

Residents

At the 2010 census , Columbus had 23,640 residents. In 2014 there were 23,248 inhabitants, of which just under 62% were white and around 36% black. Overall, the population in Columbus fell by around 10.4% between 2000 and 2014. However , according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau , the population was again over 24,500 in 2016. In terms of population, Columbus is the largest city in Lowndes County (2010) and the seventeenth largest in Mississippi. 96% of the population lives in an urban area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Columbus covers an area of ​​approximately 57.8 km², of which approximately 55.5 km² is land and 2.3 km² (4%) is water.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Columbus there are, among others, production facilities of the helicopter and aircraft parts manufacturer Airbus Helicopters and the steel manufacturer Steel Dynamics . Furthermore, the firm Stark Aerospace of Israel Aerospace Industries produces drones and sensors in Columbus; the company Weyerhaeuser has a pulp mill in Columbus. The Columbus Air Force Base is located about 14 kilometers north of Columbus.

The Alabama and Gulf Coast Railway operates a 690-kilometer railroad line between Pensacola , Florida and Columbus.

Disasters

On June 12, 1990, an explosion occurred at a fireworks factory 30 miles outside of Columbus, killing two workers.

Between the end of 1997 and the beginning of 1999 there was a series of murders involving five senior citizens between the ages of 61 and 80.

In November 2002, a tornado caused great devastation in Columbus, devastating at least 55 buildings, including 26 of 60 buildings belonging to the Mississippi University for Women .

Robert E. Smith has served as Mayor of Columbus since 2006 . His son Robert E. junior was found shot dead in his home in December 2016.

In July 2015, the Columbus City Council unanimously decided not to publicly fly the Mississippi flag because it contains the Confederate War Flag , after many other cities such as Hattiesburg , Clarksdale , Grenada and Magnolia had already decided to do so .
