De Soto National Forest

Hattiesburg is a city ( City ) and the county seat ( the county seat ) in Forrest County in the US state of Mississippi . With just under 50,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest in the state.

The location at the intersection of Interstate 59 and US Highway 49 houses the University of Southern Mississippi and the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum .

Hattiesburg, the administrative seat of the county named after the Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest , was also the scene of an attack by the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in 1966 .

A tornado raged here on February 10, 2013. South of the city is the De Soto National Forest .
