She first wrote romances under the pseudonym Caroline Burnes. From 1993 she also published under her own name.
In 1999 she started her Bones series around the private detective Sarah Booth Delaney.
Sarah Booth Delaney
With the creation of the detective Sarah Booth Delaney, Carolyn Haines orientated herself on models of the American crime and western literature.
As an impoverished "Daddy's Girl" in the small town of Zinnia, the heroine of the title is not good at cash, drinks whiskey, has a horse and a dog. She maintains her independence from men, which is why her relationships are intense but fleeting. She also has a certain forlornness.
With her partner Tinkie Richmond and the once-man journalist Cece, she solves criminal cases in the Mississippi Delta. In addition to the animals mentioned, her property is inhabited by the ghost Jitty, with whom she has interesting dialogues.
