Leon Punch

Leon Ashton Punch (born April 21, 1928 in Inverell , † December 28, 1991 in Church Point ) was an Australian politician and from 1975 to 1976 Deputy Prime Minister of New South Wales .

Profession and Member of Parliament

The Barraba Shire parish farmer, rancher and councilor (1956-1959) was first elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly on March 21, 1959. There he represented the interests of the Upper Hunter constituencies and from March 3, 1962 of Gloucester for 26 years until July 2, 1985 . In parliament he was at times committee chairman and temporarily acting parliamentary speaker.

Government member

From January 17, 1973 to May 14, 1976, the father of two sons was minister in the government of the state of New South Wales for the departments of public works and ports as well as temporarily acting minister for decentralization and development as well as for local administration.

From December 17, 1975 to May 14, 1976, he was also Deputy Prime Minister as the successor to Charles Cutler . He replaced him as chairman of the Country Party in 1975 , after having previously been its deputy as party chairman from 1973 to 1975.

In addition, Leon Ashton was Senator from Newcastle University from 1966 to 1974 .
