Henry Winston
Henry Winston (born April 2, 1911 in Hattiesburg , Forrest County , Mississippi , † December 13, 1986 in the Soviet Union ) (also known as Winnie ) was an American politician of the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA). Winston was for a long time Vice Chairman of the CPUSA behind Gus Hall ; his death in 1986 sparked a debate about his successor, as Afro-Americans within the party again wanted to see an African-American in that position, while Hall favored another candidate.
Life
Henry Winston grew up with five siblings first in Hattiesburg, then after 1925 in Kansas City ( Missouri ). After graduating from school, Winston was unemployed , also because of the low demand for labor caused by the global economic crisis . In 1933 Winston first joined a communist organization, the Young Communist League . This served as the youth organization of the CPUSA. From 1936 he was a member of the Central Committee of the CPUSA and thus one of the leading representatives of this party until his death. Winston was also active in the anti-imperialist movement.
