The Forrest County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The seat of the county administration ( County Seat ) and at the same time the largest city is located in Hattiesburg , which was named after Hattie Hardy , the wife of the city founder Captain WH Hardy .

The county is located in southern Mississippi, about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 1,218 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Forrest County was formed on April 19, 1906 from parts of Perry County. It was named after Nathan Bedford Forrest , a lieutenant general of the Confederate States of America and early organizer of the Ku Klux Klan .

As of the 2000 census , Forrest County had 72,604 people in 27,183 households and 17,315 families. The population density was 60 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.34 percent white, 33.55 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.74 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.75 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.26 percent of the population.
Of the 27,183 households, 31.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.6 percent were married couples living together, 17.2 percent were single mothers, and 36.3 percent were non-families. 28.5 percent of all households were single households and 8.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size 3.07.
24.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 18.2 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 18.3 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 11.3 percent were 65 years or older . The average age was 30 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 89.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 85.3 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 27,420 USD , for a family is 35,791 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,742 versus $ 20,500 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,160. About 17.1 percent of families and 22.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
