The Harrison County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seats are Gulfport , named for its location on the Gulf of Mexico , and Biloxi . It is one of the ten Mississippi counties that have two county governments.

The county is located in the south of Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2528 square kilometers, of which 1023 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Harrison County was formed on February 5, 1841 from parts of Hancock County and Jackson County. It was named after William Henry Harrison (1773–1841), the ninth President of the United States.
One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the last home of Jefferson Davis , Beauvoir . A total of 40 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Harrison County had 189,601 people in 71,538 households and 48,574 families. The population density was 126 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.15 percent white, 21.09 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 2.60 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.72 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.59 percent of the population.
Of the 71,538 households, 33.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.1 percent were married couples living together, 15.1 percent were single mothers, and 32.1 percent were non-families. 25.8 percent of all households were single households and 8.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.07.
26.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.1 percent between 18 and 24, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 11.1 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 99.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 97.5 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 35,624 USD , for a family is 41,445 US dollars. For men, the median income was $ 29,867 compared to $ 22,030 for women. The per capita income was $ 18,024. About 11.6 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
