history

Rankin County was formed on February 4, 1828 from parts of Hinds County. It was named after Christopher Rankin (1788-1826), a member of the US House of Representatives .

According to the 2000 census , Rankin County had 115,327 people in 42,089 households and 31,145 families. The population density was 57 people per square kilometer.
