The Rankin County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Brandon , named after Gerard Brandon , a governor.
Rankin County is part of the metropolitan area around Mississippi's capital Jackson .

history
Rankin County was formed on February 4, 1828 from parts of Hinds County. It was named after Christopher Rankin (1788-1826), a member of the US House of Representatives .

According to the 2000 census , Rankin County had 115,327 people in 42,089 households and 31,145 families. The population density was 57 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.03 percent white, 17.12 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.41 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.32 percent of the population.
Of the 42,089 households, 36.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 12.2 percent were single mothers, and 26.0 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent of all households were single households and 6.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.07.
25.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24, 32.4 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 9.5 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.6 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 92.5 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 44,946 USD , for a family is 51,707 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,097 versus $ 26,096 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,412. About 7.3 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
