The Rankin County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Brandon , named after Gerard Brandon , a governor.

Rankin County is part of the metropolitan area around Mississippi's capital Jackson .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of Mississippi and has an area of 2088 square kilometers, of which 82 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Rankin County was formed on February 4, 1828 from parts of Hinds County. It was named after Christopher Rankin (1788-1826), a member of the US House of Representatives .

According to the 2000 census , Rankin County had 115,327 people in 42,089 households and 31,145 families. The population density was 57 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.03 percent white, 17.12 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.41 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.32 percent of the population.

Of the 42,089 households, 36.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 12.2 percent were single mothers, and 26.0 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent of all households were single households and 6.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over.
