The county is located in northwest Mississippi, about 35 km to the west from Arkansas and the Mississippi , and has an area of 1,053 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Quitman County was formed in 1877 from parts of Coahoma County and Panola County. It was named after John A. Quitman (1798-1858), a governor of Mississippi (1835-1836, 1850-1851) and a member of the US House of Representatives (1855-1858).
Four sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 3, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Quitman County had 10,117 people in 3,565 households and 2,506 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 30.47 percent white, 68.62 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.54 percent of the population.
Of the 3,565 households, 34.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 37.6 percent were married couples living together, 26.8 percent were single mothers, and 29.7 percent were non-families. 26.9 percent of all households were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.42 people.
32.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24, 25.7 percent between 25 and 44, 19.5 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.2 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 86.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 79.3 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 20,636 USD , for a family is 25,394 USD. Males had a median income of $ 23,571 versus $ 16,993 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,817. About 28.6 percent of families and 33.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
