The county is located in the extreme southeast of Mississippi, borders the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Alabama to the east and has an area of 2,702 square kilometers, of which 819 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

A. Jackson

Jackson County was formed on December 18, 1812 from the Mobile District. It was named after Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), the seventh President of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Jackson County had 131,420 people in 47,676 households and 35,709 families. The population density was 70 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.35 percent white, 20.87 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 1.57 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.72 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.14 percent of the population.

Of the 47,676 households, 37.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 14.5 percent were single mothers, and 25.1 percent were non-families. 20.8 percent of all households were single households and 7.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.14.

27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.3 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 98.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 95.9 males.
