The county is located in western Mississippi and has an area of 2,419 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Yazoo County was formed on January 21, 1823 from parts of Hinds County. It was named, like the district capital, after the Yazoo River that runs here .
One site has National Historic Landmark status , the Holly Bluff Site archaeological site . 14 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Yazoo County had 28,149 people in 9,178 households and 6,644 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 44.74 percent white, 53.96 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.38 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 9,178 households, 35.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.2 percent were married couples living together, 23.7 percent were single mothers, and 27.6 percent were non-families. 24.5 percent of all households were single households and 11.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.35 people.
28.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44, 20.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.4 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 34 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 103.6 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 103.6 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 24,795 USD , for a family is 29,395 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,553 versus $ 19,797 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,062. About 25.4 percent of families and 31.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
