The Greene County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Leakesville .

The county is located almost in the extreme south of Mississippi, borders Alabama in the east and is about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the south. Greene County covers an area of 1,861 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Greene County was formed on December 9, 1811 from parts of Amite County, Franklin County and Wayne County. It was named after Nathanael Greene (1742–1786), a general in the American War of Independence .
Two places in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 1, 2018.

As of the 2000 census , Greene County had 13,299 people in 4,148 households and 3,152 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.79 percent white, 26.18 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.38 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.80 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 4,148 households, 37.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, and 24.0 percent were non-families. 22.0 percent of all households were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.12.
24.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 13.1 percent between 18 and 24, 32.1 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.1 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 32 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 130.0 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 141.0 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 28,336 USD , for a family is 33,037 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,189 versus $ 17,935 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,868. About 16.5 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
