The county is located in northeast Mississippi, about 40 km to the east from Alabama , to the north about 60 km from Tennessee and has an area of ​​1,174 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Robert E. Lee

Lee County was formed on October 26, 1866 from parts of Itawamba County and Pontotoc County. It was named after Robert Edward Lee , a colonel in the US Army and the most successful general in the Confederate Armed Forces . His most important command during the Civil War was the supreme command of the Northern Virginia Army .

Lee County has two National Battlefields , the Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site and the Tupelo National Battlefield . 23 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 31, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Lee County had 75,755 people in 29,200 households and 20,819 families. The population density was 65 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.66 percent white, 24.51 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.52 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.43 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44, 21.8 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 11.5 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 87.5 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 36,165 USD , for a family is 43,149 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,039 versus $ 22,235 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,956. About 10.5 percent of families and 13.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
