The Tallahatchie County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seats are Charleston and Sumner , making Tallahatchie County one of the ten counties in Mississippi that have two county administrations.

The county is located in northwest Mississippi and has an area of 1,689 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Tallahatchie County was formed on December 31, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after the Tallahatchie River that runs here .

Nine structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Tallahatchie County had 14,903 people in 5,263 households and 3,826 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 39.62 percent white, 59.43 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian and 0.05 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.46 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.92 percent of the population.

Of the 5,263 households, 34.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.5 percent were married couples living together, 23.5 percent were single mothers, and 27.3 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent of all households were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.36 people.

30.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.0 percent between 18 and 24, 25.9 percent between 25 and 44, 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.2 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 33 years. Statistically, there were 87.8 males for every 100 females and 84.4 males for every 100 females aged 18 or over.
