The county is located in south-central Mississippi and has an area of 1129 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Lawrence County was formed on December 22, 1814 from parts of Marion County. It was named after James Lawrence (1781-1813), a naval officer who became known with the saying: "Don't give up the ship" in the British-American War of 1812 after he had been fatally wounded.

According to the 2000 census , Lawrence County had 13,258 people in 5,040 households and 3,749 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.94 percent white, 32.07 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.09 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.44 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.67 percent of the population.
Of the 5,040 households, 35.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 percent were married couples living together, 14.4 percent were single mothers, and 25.6 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent of all households were single households and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.10 people.
27.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.3 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.3 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 28,495 USD , for a family is 37,899 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,925 versus $ 18,707 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,469. About 16.6 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
