The county is located to the west of Mississippi and borders Louisiana to the west , with the Mississippi being the natural boundary. Issaquena County covers an area of 1143 square kilometers, of which 73 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Issaquena County was formed on January 23, 1844 from parts of Washington County. It was named after the Indian expression for lovely water . Before the outbreak of the American Civil War , the county had the highest concentration of slaves with 115 owners of 7244 slaves.
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Issaquena County had 2,274 people in 726 households and 509 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 36.32 percent white, 62.75 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.62 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.44 percent of the population.
Of the 726 households, 34.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.6 percent were married couples living together, 16.0 percent were single mothers, and 29.8 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent of all households were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.37 people.
27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.9 percent between 18 and 24, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44, 19.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.7 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 33 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 113.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 130.1 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 19,936 USD , for a family is 23,913 USD. Males had a median income of $ 23,167 versus $ 17,115 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,581. About 25.9 percent of families and 33.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
