The county is east of the geographic center of Mississippi, borders Alabama to the east and has an area of 1,853 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Lauderdale County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after James Lauderdale , a hero of the British-American War of 1812.
One location has National Historic Landmark status , the Highland Park Dentzel Carousel and Shelter Building amusement ride . A total of 47 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Lauderdale County had 78,161 people in 29,990 households and 20,573 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 60.15 percent white, 38.18 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.50 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.14 percent of the population.
Of the 29,990 households, 33.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.7 percent were married couples living together, 18.3 percent were single mothers, and 31.4 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent of all households were single households and 11.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.06.
26.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.2 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 90.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 85.5 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 30,768 USD , for a family is 37,581 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,069 versus $ 21,111 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,026. About 17.1 percent of families and 20.8 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
