The county is east of the geographic center of Mississippi, borders Alabama to the east and has an area of ​​1,853 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Lauderdale County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after James Lauderdale , a hero of the British-American War of 1812.

One location has National Historic Landmark status , the Highland Park Dentzel Carousel and Shelter Building amusement ride . A total of 47 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Lauderdale County had 78,161 people in 29,990 households and 20,573 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 60.15 percent white, 38.18 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.50 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races.
