The county is located in northeast Mississippi, borders Alabama to the east and has an area of ​​1,400 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Itawamba County was formed from Indian land on February 9, 1836. It was named after an Indian chief.

According to the 2000 census , Itawamba County had 22,770 people in 8,773 households and 6,500 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.47 percent white, 6.47 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.32 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
