Itawamba County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Fulton , which was named after Robert Fulton .

The county is located in northeast Mississippi, borders Alabama to the east and has an area of 1,400 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Itawamba County was formed from Indian land on February 9, 1836. It was named after an Indian chief.
One place in the county is on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018), the Pharr Mounds archaeological site .

According to the 2000 census , Itawamba County had 22,770 people in 8,773 households and 6,500 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.47 percent white, 6.47 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.32 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 8,773 households, 33.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, and 25.9 percent were non-families. 23.4 percent of all households were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.95.
24.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.6 percent between 18 and 24, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.2 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 36 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 94.1 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 92.5 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 31,156 USD , for a family is 36,793 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,231 versus $ 20,900 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,956. About 10.1 percent of families and 14.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
