Controversy

The Juin Baize case

16-year-old Juin Baize lived from woman to man with her mother and two sisters in New Harmony before her sex change . As a boy he moved with his family to Fulton, where his grandmother lived. Baize was sent home on February 3, 2010 for wearing clothes that were common for girls. One day later he was expelled from school for no specific reason. Baize contacted the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU asked the school to send documents to the organization explaining why Baize was expelled from the school. The school did not comply with this request. After the ACLU posted the story to the local newspaper, Baize's grandmother recommended that he and his family leave the state . The family now lives in Florida . Baize and the ACLU decided not to pursue the case any further due to this twist.

Prom affair

Shortly after the Baize case, the school hit the media again. In March 2010, the school received both national and international attention after the school canceled a prom because former student Constance McMillen wanted to show up with a same-sex friend. After both the principal and vice-principal banned McMillen from going to prom with their girlfriend, McMillen turned to the American Civil Liberties Union . ACLU attorneys wrote a letter to the school that it was against the American Constitution to expel students based on their sexual orientation. The school canceled the ball without giving a reason for the decision. The ACLU then made the matter public. McMillen went to Los Angeles and appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres talk show . More than 400,000 people followed the story on McMillen's Facebook profile . At the end of March, the Mississippi Supreme Court in Aberdeen ruled that the school had violated McMillen's fundamental rights , but that court did not object to the cancellation of the ball.
