La Fayette

Lafayette County was formed from Chickasaw land on February 9, 1836 . It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a French general and politician who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the colonist side and also played an important role in the French Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Lafayette County had 38,744 people in 14,373 households and 8,321 families. The population density was 24 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.85 percent white, 25.05 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 1.67 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races.
