The Lafayette County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Oxford , which was named after the city of the same name in England.

The county is located in northern Mississippi, about 60 km from Tennessee and has an area of 1759 square kilometers, of which 125 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

La Fayette

Lafayette County was formed from Chickasaw land on February 9, 1836 . It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a French general and politician who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the colonist side and also played an important role in the French Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Lafayette County had 38,744 people in 14,373 households and 8,321 families. The population density was 24 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.85 percent white, 25.05 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 1.67 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.10 percent of the population.

Of the 14,373 households, 26.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, and 42.1 percent were non-families. 29.1 percent of all households were single households and 7.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.97 people.

19.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 27.1 percent between 18 and 24, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44, 17.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 9.8 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 94.6 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 28,517 USD , for a family is 42,910 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,964 versus $ 21,207 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,406. About 10.2 percent of families and 21.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
