history

Oxford and Lafayette Counties were acquired by the Chickasaw Indians in 1832. The University of Mississippi , also known as Ole Miss , was founded in 1848. During the Civil War, Union troops under Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman conquered the city in 1862.

In 1962, racism in Oxford attracted nationwide attention. The National Guard had to protect the University of Mississippi's first black student, James Meredith , from angry protesters.

The place is known, among other things, as the center of life and work of William Faulkner for many years . The villa in which he wrote many of his great works, acquired in 1930 by the Nobel Prize winner for literature, is now a museum.

Oxford made international headlines in the context of the 2008 presidential election in the United States with the "first presidential debate" held on September 26th (local time), the televised debate between Barack Obama and John McCain .
