Sam Kendricks (born September 7, 1992 in Oxford , Mississippi ) is an American pole vaulter .

Athletic career

Sam Kendricks was born in Oxford , Mississippi and attended high school there before going to the University of Mississippi .

Sam Kendricks won the gold medal at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan , Russia . In 2015, after winning the US Trials, he qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where he finished ninth with 5.65 m .

In 2016 he won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland with a jump of 5.80 m. In the outdoor season he was again US champion and thus secured a starting place for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There he won the bronze medal with 5.85 m in the final .

At the 2017 World Championships in London , Kendricks won the pole vault final as the only athlete to jump the 5.95 m height, ahead of Piotr Lisek and Renaud Lavillenie .

In 2020, Kendricks took part in the Ultimate Garden Clash long-distance competition called Ultimate Garden Clash and took third place behind Renaud Lavillenie and Armand Duplantis .
